Josephine (Schmaltz) Planeta, 91, of East Haddam and Middletown and formerly of Cromwell, wife of the late Charles W. Planeta, died Saturday (May 17, 2003) at the Middlesex Hospital. She was born in Cromwell, the daughter of the late Henry and Wilhelmina (Monnes) Schmaltz.
She attended local schools, graduated from New Britain Normal School in 1931 and attended Central Connecticut State University. She taught elementary education for many years in Cromwell and Hartford. She was a communicant of Saint Andrews Roman Catholic Church in Colchester and a member of the Ladies' Guild.
Josephine is survived by a son, Bill Planeta and his wife Sandra, of East Haddam; a daughter, Elizabeth Seams and her husband Duane of Rogersville, TN; two sisters, Rita Lewis-Buggie of East Lyme, Ann Purdell of Portland; two brothers, George Schmaltz and his wife Patricia of Cromwell, Henry Schmaltz and his wife Eunice of Jaffrey, NH; also five grandchildren and five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Fred Schmaltz.
The Funeral Liturgy will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Andrew's Church, Norwich Ave., Colchester. Burial will be in the St. Joseph's Cemetery, Chester. There are no calling hours. The Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown is in charge of arrangements.
