Dorothy Reeves Owen

Chorus

Dorothy Reeves Owen, a retired music teacher, died recently
in Florida. She was 82.

Mrs. Owen taught at Middletown High School for more than 10 years
as a vocal music instructor, said her husband, Edward K. Owen.

After moving to Cromwell, she taught at Cromwell High School
when it opened. She taught there for more than 20 years before
they both retired in 1969, her husband said.

Mrs. Owen attended Culver Stockton College in Canton, Mo.,
and was the first student of that college to receive a
bachelor of music degree in vocal music education.

Dick R. Schlegel, of Ottumwa, Iowa, remembers his aunt well.
"I visited her several times when they lived in Cromwell,"
he said. "Her mother was a fifth-grade teacher for years and
taught until she 79 years old. I guess that is why she was
a teacher," Schlegel said. "She taught me how to sing when
I was a little kid. She was more of a sister to me than
an aunt," he said. "I seemed to be her charge. I spent many
happy hours sitting beside her on the piano bench. She
had me singing in church when I was 3," he said.
