Joyce (Parkinson) Wrabel of Windsor Locks taught her last lesson as she passed with dignity into the loving arms of her Savior on Friday October 10, 2014, at home after waging a valiant three year battle with lung cancer.
She was born in Hartford on June 5, 1954, the daughter of James and Gertrude (Keyes) Parkinson of Clinton. Joyce was married to Michael Wrabel of Windsor Locks and the mother of Michael (Amy Montemerlo) Wrabel, James (Marybeth Smiley) Wrabel, Heather (David Ragion ) and David (Katie Lancaster) Wrabel. Joyce was the doting grandmother of Jeffrey, Gregory and Caroline Joyce Ragion, Laura, Lincoln and Parker Wrabel. Joyce is also survived by three sisters and their families, Barbara Parkinson of Old Saybrook, Betsy (Stephen) Pabst of Killingworth and MaryEllen (Gary) lannicelli of Cromwell; an Uncle, C. Robert Parkinson of Beulah, MI and several nieces and nephews.
She obtained degrees from Eastern Connecticut State University, Southern Connecticut State University and Central Connecticut State University. Joyce was an educator in the Windsor Locks school system for 22 years and loved to hear successful stories from her former students. Her favorite students were her grandson Jeffrey and his friend Isabella Barthel.
She was a passionate follower of the UConn Women's and Men's Basketball teams, the Yankees and the NY Giants, but most enjoyed watching her sons and son-in-law play softball every summer.
Joyce was a communicant of St. Mary Church. She enjoyed reading, tending the flowers in her yard, doing crossword puzzles and playing Sudoku puzzles.
The family would like to thank Dr. Susan Tannenbaum and Kristi Dubey and the staff at the University of Connecticut Health Center Hematology and Oncology Clinic and the nurses and staff on the 6th floor, PJ Furness of Masonicare, Lenny Turner of Professional Homecare and caregivers Elaine Burke and Danielle Hamley.
Relatives and friends are welcome to join in celebrating Joyce's life on Wednesday, October 15, 2014, from 4 pm to 8 pm at the Windsor Locks Funeral Home, 441 Spring St., Windsor Locks. A funeral procession will form at 9 am at the funeral home on Thursday, October 16, 2014, for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 am at St. Mary Church, 42 Spring St., Windsor Locks. The burial will immediately follow in St. Mary Cemetery.
