It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of William John Buggie, beloved husband of Marie Labbadia Buggie and father of sons, William and Shaun, on February 6, 2025.
Bill was born on January 27, 1943, in Middletown, Connecticut to William K. Buggie and Helen Anderson Buggie. He grew up in Cromwell, attended Cromwell schools, and graduated from the University of Connecticut. Bill was an avid athlete, playing multiple sports throughout his school years and excelling at golf at a young age. He developed a lifelong love of the game and was a member of the UCONN golf team, Edgewood and Wethersfield golf clubs, playing primarily at Portland golf courses in his later years. He enjoyed many golf trips with family and buddies throughout New England and the Southeast, the high point being his golf trip to Scotland with his two sons, a memory he cherished throughout his life. Aside from golf, he also loved traveling, vacationing, and dining out. He was a great chef, and his annual St. Paddy's Day dinner was epic. Bill's talents were endless. He was an accomplished artist and his numerous paintings, lovingly done for family and friends, will be treasured for years to come.
Bill served in the United States Army in the 1960s and then began a career in insurance with his dad and at the Aetna in Hartford. He and Marie married in 1971 and settled in Portland, where together, they raised their family. He became an active member of the community, coaching minor league baseball and soccer teams and spearheading Project Graduation at Portland High School in 1991. He was a past member of the Portland Lion's Club, the Middletown Elks, as well as the Knights of Columbus Council Number 6 in Cromwell and the American Legion.
Bill co-owned and operated Superior Concrete Products in Portland for 30 years with his brother-in-law, Joe. He began his retirement in 2002 and soon started "mowing grass" at Quarry Ridge Golf Course, where he stayed for the next 20 plus years because he just didn't know how to stop working. He had relentless energy and was always willing to do anything he could to help a friend or a cause. He leaves behind an immeasurable void. His legendary wit, infectious smile, and endless generosity will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.
Bill is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marie, sons, William and wife Tara, Shaun and wife Erica, his granddaughters, whom he loved "to the moon and back", Lulu, Olivia, Bridget, and Aubrey, and his cherished sisters and their spouses, Barbara and Frederick Fountain, Sharon and Richard Zajack, and Patricia Grieb, brother-in-law, Joseph Labbadia and his wife Karen and sister-in-law, Patricia Woronoff and her husband Kenneth. He leaves numerous nieces and nephews and their children, who all loved "Uncle Bill". Bill was predeceased by his youngest sister, Susan Palmer and her husband George, and his brother-in-law, Frederick Grieb.
