Maureen Rowen Schaffner
1937 - 2021
Maureen R. Schaffner, 83, of South Windsor, CT., beloved wife of John P. Schaffner died peacefully on Monday, June 21, 2021, at Hartford Hospital, surrounded by her family. She was born in Rochester, NY on October 25, 1937, daughter to the late Edward and Marie (Merrigan) Rowen.
Maureen grew up in Cromwell, CT, and was a graduate of Middletown High School with the Class of 1955. She went on to graduate from Dean Junior College in Franklin, MA in 1957. Shortly after, Maureen moved to New York City where she spent time studying at NYU and working in the advertising industry.
She married the love of her life, John P. Schaffner on June 16, 1962. They initially lived in Glastonbury and eventually settled in South Windsor for over 50 years. Maureen was a prominent member of the South Windsor community volunteering with the PTO, where she served as president, Girl Scouts, Women's Club and other groups while her children were young. She taught physical education at Assumption Junior High School. She then worked as the Office Manager for Dr. Daniel Segal's Dentistry Practice in South Windsor for over 15 years.
Maureen enjoyed tennis and bowling, was a talented painter, an adventurous traveler, and a voracious reader. Her biggest pleasures in life were attending her children's and grandchildrens' field hockey, swimming, cross country, ultimate frisbee, softball, basketball, football, and lacrosse games, as well as, ski races and dance recitals. Maureen most cherished the time she spent with her family and friends, most especially her grandchildren.
Along with her husband, John, she leaves her children, Erin Tynan and her husband Richard of Somers, Colleen Barisano and her husband Dana of Westford, MA, Patrick Schaffner and his wife Kelly Doherty-Schaffner of Glastonbury, and Kathleen Schaffner and her husband Charles Clarke of Burlington,VT; her beloved grandchildren, Sean and Patrick Tynan, Cameron, Jake, and Cole Barisano, Jack and Kaitlyn Schaffner, and Skylar and Rowen Clarke.
Maureen will be remembered for her true loyalty, compassion and abundance of love for her many friends and family. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, June 25, 2021 from 9:00 AM –10:30 AM, at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home at 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor, CT; followed by a Christian Mass to begin at 11:00 AM, at St. Margaret Mary Church in South Windsor. Burial will be private at the request of her family.
