~ Sheila McAllister Laverty~
Class of 1954

With great sadness, the family of Sheila Ann (McAllister) Laverty of Cromwell announces her passing from this life on January 5, 2018. After a brief illness, she died at home with her children at her side. Born to Leonard and Corrine (Stoveken) McAllister in 1937, Sheila was a lifelong resident of Cromwell.

She graduated from Middletown High School in 1954 and Colby College in 1958. She was a member of St. John's Church in Cromwell. She worked for many years at Aetna and more recently at Choice Magazine.

Sheila was predeceased by her husband; John E. Laverty. She is survived by her sons, James E. Laverty of Middletown, PA and his wife Cynthia, John M. Laverty and his wife Cynthia of Portland and her daughter Colleen Sokolowski and her husband John of Cromwell. Her family was the love of her life, especially her four grandchildren, Jack and Erin Sokolowski and Shawn and Kathryn Laverty. She is also survived by her sister Marcia McAllister of The Villages, FL, as well as three dear nieces and a nephew.

Sheila's childhood years were spent on her family's dairy farm, McAllister Dairy, in Cromwell. She also spent her summers at Lake Hayward in East Haddam, CT, where she enjoyed the company of lifelong friends and was a fixture at 3rd Beach. Sheila could be spotted from afar on the beach or in the water in one of her many signature beach hats. 3rd Beach has truly lost a fashion icon.

Sheila was extraordinarily kind and had many dear friends. She will be missed by the ladies of the "knitting club", neighbors from Ridge Road and colleagues at Choice Magazine where she continued to work until 2016. She enjoyed spending her time with all of them.

Sheila's family offers heartfelt gratitude to the Middlesex Hospital Hospice Team.

Sheila's family and friends are invited to celebrate her life Wednesday, January 10, 2018 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Cromwell Funeral Home, 506 Main Street, Cromwell, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John's Church in Cromwell on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sheila's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 825 Brook Street, I-91 Tech Ctr., Rocky Hill, CT 06067.
