Katherine "Kae" Ewald Nielsen, 93, of Cromwell passed peacefully at home on October 9, 2017.
She was the beloved wife of the late Howard F. Nielsen, Sr. Kae was born in Middletown, CT on March 27, 1924 to the late Anna (Kelley) and William T. Ewald. After graduating from Middletown High School in 1942, Kae went to work for Prudential in Hartford and attended night classes at Hillyer College.
Kae and Howard, lifelong residents of Cromwell were high school sweethearts and married after Howard's return from the Pacific Theater in WWII. Growing up on Court Street, they then built their home and raised their family there. Kae dedicated her life to her family. She was an active member of St. Johns Church and the Women's Guild, Scouting and the Cromwell Rose Town Square Dancers. Once her kids were grown, she also volunteered for the American Red Cross, was a member and longtime treasurer for the Friends of the Belden Library, and an active member of TOPS. She enjoyed being active and was a member of the YMCA for several years. She could be seen sledding down Moose's hill or skating with the kids and later riding bikes around town with Howard, and cross-country skiing. Kae loved her gardens and passing along plants for others to enjoy.
In addition to her husband, Kae was predeceased by her son, Niel Nielsen. She is survived by four children: two daughters, Chris Williams (Simsbury) and Beth Nielsen (Middletown), and two sons Mark Nielsen (Jupiter, FL) and Howard Nielsen, Jr. (Cromwell) and daughter-in-law, Leslie Nielsen (Ione, CA). Five grandchildren, Daniel Nielsen, Matthew Carling (Jen), Emily Noel (Nigel), Bill Williams, Stephanie Cilley (Mike), and three great-grandchildren Jordyn Kneeland, Avery Cilley and Maria Noel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, October 13 at 11:30 a.m. at Saint John Church, 5 Saint John Court, Cromwell. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park in Rocky Hill.
Family and friends may call on Thursday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Cromwell Funeral Home, 506 Main Street, Cromwell.
