Class of 1941
Roland Charles Anderson, 86, of South Windsor, beloved husband of Ruth (Juchnewicz) Anderson, passed away on Saturday, May 21, at Manchester Hospital.
Born in Cromwell, he was the son of the late Albert E. and Madeline (Brown) Anderson.
Roland attended Middletown High School graduating in 1941. He then pursued both his BSME and MSME at the University of Connecticut beginning in the fall of 1941. He also graduated from Pensacola Naval Air Station in 1944 and Navy Helicopter Training in 1957 and served aboard the USS Antietam (Fighting Squadron 89) during WWII. He was a former member of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Yalesville, a member of the American Legion and Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. Roland designed helicopters for Kaman Aircraft and had a true love for flying.
Besides his wife, Ruth, he is survived by two daughters, Adrienne King and her husband, Timothy of Dayville and Heidi Ross and her husband, Edward of Brooklyn; his brother, Donald Anderson and his wife, Josie of Cromwell; his sister, Madeline McDermott of Cromwell; three grandchildren, Ensign Hillary Ross of Corpus Christi, Texas, Midshipman 3/C Edward Ross of Annapolis, Md., and John Paul Ross of Brooklyn; his sister-in-law, Haruko "Spring" Anderson of Tampa, Fla., and many loving nieces and nephews.
He was also predeceased by two brothers, Albert E. Anderson Jr. and Gilbert Anderson and his brother-in-law, William McDermott.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, May 26, at 10 a.m. at St. John Church, 5 St. John Court, Cromwell. Interment will follow in West Cemetery in Cromwell where full military honors will be accorded.
