George J. Schmaltz, 93, lifelong resident of Cromwell died peacefully at home on October 9. George fought in Europe with the US Army 12th Armored Division during World War II. He retired from the State of Connecticut Treasurer's Office in the position of Chief Accountant. He was active in the Knights of Columbus, DeSoto Council No. 6 where he served as Financial Secretary for 50 years. George served on the Board of Commissioners of the Cromwell Fire District. He was a member of the American Legion Post 105.

George is survived by his wife of 67 years, Patricia (Ewald); son, Jeffrey E. Schmaltz and his wife Susan of Hanover, Maryland; daughter, Judith S. Crowley and her husband Michael of Burlington, CT; daughter, Janet P. Schmaltz of Rocky Hill and five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; his brother Henry Schmaltz of Jaffrey, NH and many nieces and nephews. George is predeceased by his parents, Henry and Wilhelmina (Monnes); his sisters, Josephine Planeta; Anne Purdell; Rita Lewis; and his brother, Fred Schmaltz.

The family would like to thank the staff of Middlesex Hospital Home Care for their kindness and compassionate care during George's final weeks.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, October 16th at 12 noon at St. John Church, 5 Saint John Court, Cromwell. Burial will follow in the State Veterans' Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded.

Relatives and friends may call at the Cromwell Funeral Home, 506 Main Street, Cromwell on Thursday, October 15th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.
